Blow your own trumpet

Blow your own trumpet

All too often, I come across business owners who are undoubtedly the sort of people I would like to do business with.

They're committed and conscientious, dedicated to providing the best customer service they can, honest and trustworthy, and great people to know.  They're also, all too often, way too modest to promote their businesses the way they should.

"I know I should shout about it more, but..." is the phrase they use most.

Too busy getting on with doing a good job, they resist marketing themselves more assertively, even though they have great things to say.

Good, effective marketing isn't about being brash and boastful but it is about acknowledging what you're good at and letting the people who value those things know you're there and want to do business with them.  It's about getting the customers you deserve and plenty of them - and there's nothing wrong with that!

Rings a lot of bells for me at the moment - trying to change a mindset of it being rude and boastful to talk about what you do, to one where actually it helps people to let them know how you can help them with your products or services. It doesn't mean being pushy or false about what you're doing. This is a long held belief for me as well as many others that needs some challenge, so thanks Francine.

Yes, a very common problem. The key is to provide value to the readership/audience with your news story and to move away from shameless self promotion. What do you know that others don't and that would help them? Views play as large a role in PR as news. Combine them both for a more balanced, less selfish and far more powerful strategy.

A great point, Greg. Providing value is far more powerful than a hard sell. More of a "long game" of course, and still requires sticking your head above the parapet but wanting to help and do "more than make money" (as a new client has put it) can be the great driver for a successful business.
