Belated RIP Pat Butcher, you’re now to be remembered only by the occasional reference to spangly earrings and Big Mo bitching about what you got up to “in the 80s”, surely a classic euphemism in the making.
Pat is less likely to be remembered by the profession that kept her busiest for many years in her hay day, that of bookkeeper to every business in Albert Square. She seemed to shrug off this mantle some while back, coinciding with an increase in incidences of bankruptcy/near bankruptcy/debt that mysteriously disappears when it no longer serves a plot line/Phil Mitchell has had someone beaten up. But, for those years, Pat Butcher truly was the Emily Bishop of Albert Square. You've got to keep your business finances under control.
So, with East End bookkeeping skills heading the way of many lost languages, who is going to keep the East End’s businesses on (or, where dictated by plot, off) the financial straight and narrow now?
I’d say there’s an opportunity there for Whitney. Pack in the childcare lark, luv. The Brannings/Mitchells might breed like rabbits but they’d sooner pass the resultant offspring around random unsuitables than put them into nursery. There’s no money in it for you.
Get yourself off down the college, walk straight past that wretched fashion design class, and into a bookkeeping qualification. Learn the finer (and blacker) arts of bookkeeping and with so many steady local businesses on your doorstep, you’ll never need to visit “the 80s” again.
Duff duff, duff duff duff…
